What the solar wind sounds like

The solar wind is a stream of charged particles leaving the sun, usually at 300 to 800 kilometres a second. Space is almost empty, so there is nothing to carry its sound to an ear; what people call the sound of the solar wind is its data turned into audio, the way space agencies sonify what their probes measure.

This page does that with today's numbers from NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center. The wind's speed picks the colour of the noise, from deep brown on a slow day to bright white in a fast stream, and how fast it breathes. The Kp index, how hard the earth's magnetic field is being shaken, sets its loudness and the grain of the picture.

It is the psoup noise machine with the sun's own day folded in: leave it on to work, read, or fall asleep; tomorrow the wind will sound different.
