What an earthquake sounds like

Most of an earthquake's energy travels as seismic waves far below what an ear can hear, under 20 Hz. To hear a quake, seismologists speed a seismometer's recording up until those slow waves rise into hearing; the result rumbles, cracks and rolls like distant thunder.

This page plays no recording. It reads the United States Geological Survey's list of every quake of magnitude 4.5 or more in the last day and turns each one into a low swell in brown noise, the biggest first and deepest. A quiet day breathes; a shaken one rolls. The sound changes every day because the earth does.

It is the psoup noise machine with the planet's own day folded in: leave it on to work, read, or fall asleep, and it keeps breathing after the swells pass.
